Immigrants Build America: Call to Justice

Immigrants are an essential part of America’s history and life. Everyday we see this as we appreciate the beauty of our communities — gardens, roads, public spaces, and homes, and as we enjoy the delicious food prepared by immigrant cooks. These are examples of immigrant contributions to this great nation. The tragedy of the Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, is a stark and solemn reminder of this. At present, it appears that 6 immigrant construction workers died while working to keep the bridge safe for others.
The American dream is sought by many who leave their home countries to build a better future for themselves and their families. However many Americans, including some elected officials, demonize immigrants, and use immigration reform as a political bargaining tool. The fact is that immigrants are people deserving the rights, protections, and dignity afforded to all individuals.
Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF) began with the vision of a community that provides opportunity and acceptance to all. Most CIF members are day laborers, and CIF works to promote both immigrant and labor rights. Immigrant and Labor Justice are bound since immigrant workers continue to be deliberately exploited. In 3 months of 2024, CIF-– an organization of 3 full-time staff— received over $55,000 in claims of unpaid wages from jobs in the wider community.
“Wage Theft” means that a worker is not paid for work completed. This can be underpayment per agreed terms, nonpayment, or payments that do not adhere to labor laws. Wage theft is illegal in Virginia, but there is little enforcement. Construction and restaurant workers are much more likely to experience this, and even more likely if they are immigrants. When a group of 50 members were asked at the Centreville Labor Resource Center who had experienced wage theft, every hand went up.
We mourn the lives lost on the Key Bridge, where the immigrant workers, both documented and undocumented, lost their lives in service to our country. Two of these deaths were CASA members, a partner organization similarly serving the working immigrant community in Maryland and Virginia. They are regional members of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, NDLON, along with Centreville Immigration Forum, Legal Aid Justice Center and Trabajadores Unidos. This is a real and grave reminder that we have a duty to our community members to recognize their rights to a dignified life and to be emboldened to fight anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Centreville Immigration Forum’s 2024 May Day Campaign, April 1 – May 1 2024, will feature stories of the immigrant and worker community with the hashtag #endwagetheft. This is an opportunity for you to experience the stories of many of your neighbors, friends, and family. We encourage members, supporters, and allies to learn from these stories, and to share your own stories, and engage on social media and via our website. Better working conditions, fair labor practices, and safety are essential human rights.

Los Inmigrantes Construyen América: Llamada a la Justicia
Los inmigrantes son una parte esencial de la historia americana y en la vida diaria. Cada día podemos ver y apreciar la belleza de nuestras comunidades – jardines, calles, espacios públicos, y casas, igual cuando gozamos de la comida deliciosa preparada de las manos de inmigrantes. Estos son unos ejemplos de las contribuciones del inmigrante a nuestra gran nación. La tragedia del Key Bridge en Baltimore, Maryland es un ejemplo grave y solemne. Lamentablemente, 6 inmigrantes trabajadores de construcción fallecieron mientras cumplían con su trabajo.
El sueño americano buscado por muchos quienes dejan sus países de origen para construir un mejor futuro para sus familias. Sin embargo muchos estadounidenses, incluido algunos representantes gubernamentales, criminalizan y desprecian a los inmigrantes, los usan como una herramienta de negociación en vez de hacer una reforma migratoria. Los inmigrantes son personas merecedoras de los mismos derechos, protecciones y dignidad que todos tienen.
Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF) comenzó con una visión de una comunidad que brinda oportunidad y aceptación para todos. Los miembros a quienes sirve el CIF son principalmente jornaleros y ellos promueven derechos de los inmigrantes y laboral. Robo de Salario es cuando un trabajador no recibe el pago acordado. Puede ser pago incompleto, falta de pagar, o pagos que no siguen las leyes de labor. El Robo de Salario es ilegal en Virginia, pero muy difícil de hacer cumplir. Trabajadores en las industrias de construcción y restaurantes son más susceptibles al robo de salario y mucho más si son inmigrantes.
Cuando preguntamos a un grupo de 50 miembros en el Centreville Centro de Recursos Labores – el proyecto más grande de Centreville Immigration Forum – “quien ha sido víctima de robo de salario?” todos levantaron la mano.
Estamos en luto por las vidas perdidas en el Key Bridge, donde trabajadores inmigrantes, documentados y sin documentos, perdieron sus vidas al servicio de nuestro país. Dos de estas personas fueron miembros de CASA, un organización socio también sirviendo a la comunidad inmigrante trabajador en Maryland y Virginia. Esta situación tan grave y real nos recuerda la obligación de nuestros miembros a reconocer sus derechos a una vida digna y estar inspirados a luchar contra la narrativa anti-inmigrante.
