Voices of our Volunteers & Interns: The CLRC Experience
“Being a CLRC volunteer and intern is always exciting. There are so many things to do and you take on a lot of responsibility with the roles, which makes it such a rewarding experience.”
Colleen Dowling, Spring 2016 Volunteer and Summer Operations Intern 2017
“I interned at the CLRC as the summer marketing intern, but the office was so busy that I always jumped in to ask Jasmine (Center Director) if there was something I could do to help the team. I remember over the summer, Jasmine asked me to make calls out to families in Spanish to tell let them know that the free school backpacks for their kids had come in. I mean I speak some Spanish, but at first I was very uncomfortable calling out to people I didn’t know and in Spanish! Jasmine provided me with a general script and set me off to make calls. After the fourth call I felt much more confident and everyone was so nice over the phone and excited to hear the news about their backpacks. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and it felt really great that Jasmine had so much confidence in me to make the calls!”
Kahlil Shepard, Summer Marketing Intern 2017
“I became a valuable part of their team in that I brought my organizational skills, my desire to learn by doing, and a good attitude. I think that by being able to fully understand my task and be dedicated to pursuing my desired outcome, I was actually able to make a difference in their organization. Most importantly, however, I learned about how to work efficiently, problem-solve, and also learn how to interact with people in a professional manner. These things are so important for me to continue to practice and learn in my career. In the future, I will try to do better at communicating tasks to others and asking for help if I need it. From the evaluation of this internship I will learn a lot about the project management process and how I work in that context. This will be valuable information for my future.”
Emily Bramnic, Summer ID Card Project Management Intern 2017
“This past summer, I had to opportunity to work with the Centreville Labor and Resource Center and my time there meant so much to me. I was working on building a needs assessment report for developing a family literacy program for the Spanish speaking, low income community that the Center works with. Growing up, my family’s lifestyle was much like that of the families I worked with this summer. My parents were both immigrants who struggled with English and finding the adequate employment to provide for their family: my siblings and I. Spanish was our first language and we all benefited from programs like Head Start and ESL in elementary school. Developing my report and talking to the community gave me the opportunity to give back to the same community my family was and continues to be a part of. The community and everyone at the Center created an atmosphere in which I was more than happy to work in. My experiences working with the Center, though brief, truly touched me and I am incredibly grateful to have been able to help in the construction of the family literacy program.”
